Night of the Wolfmen

It wasn’t really night, more like supper time nearing dusk. We could easily walk the 4-6 blocks back to campus before dark. There was no cause for concern, until there was…

A young lady in high school was visiting me, in a college town where they close shops early and fold in the sidewalks for good measure.  We walked into town that morning and headed back to campus at a reasonable hour for young ladies.   Friends from school passed us in a jeep heading for town square, but we were enjoying our conversation so we declined the offer of a ride.

With town square about three blocks behind us and campus about four blocks ahead, wolf calls announced the presence of a car full of boys with mischief in mind.  Our friends were well out of sight, and there were no escape routes as the car pulled into the gas station a block ahead and began to turn around.  I was bracing for a fight without much hope of winning.

Suddenly from behind us came another voice, “You sure you don’t want a ride?”  We didn’t turn my friends down the second time, giving thanks that they had returned for us.

The catch is, they didn’t return for us – or they didn’t realize it.  As far as they knew, they had driven casually, checked out the sights, and were content to return.  The whole scene was played out within the few minutes it took us to walk less than one block.  Given the laws of physics, there’s no way the jeep could have been right behind us when we needed it.   But God is bigger than physics.  He must have lifted the jeep, spun it around like a toy, and set it back on the road while the wolves were howling.

We were no match for them.  They were no match for our Protector.

  1. Well, here I am Janeen, keeping my promise to stop in, and I’m very glad I did. I really enjoyed this little story, and also your poem, Better than Old. My wife and I are both at an age to appreciate that poem. I read it to her and we both enjoyed. I know were going to be busy trying to do all the things we learned at conference, I know I am, but I will be in touch. I hope you enjoy that book of Jonah Joe, and don’t forget to say hi from time to time. Keep me posted on your journey. So glad we met. Oh, one more thing, can those sayings you have be put on caps? I wear caps a lot. If so, do you have a picture page of the caps? Anyway, let me know when you can. You know where to find me.
