Context is Everything

So much for Horrible Homonyms in ASL, there are actually some signs that are exactly the same yet carry different meanings depending entirely on context.  Not that English is immune to such things… Is a plate a flat food dish, the starting/ending base in a ball diamond, or a component in a set of dentures? (and for that matter, is a diamond a precious gem, a card suit, or a 4-sided shape having 2 pairs of equal angles that are not 90 degrees each?).  Think carefully before voicing, because context is everything!

  • FLAVOR = PREFER = FAVORITE
  • BEER = BROWN
  • PORT-TO-PORT = POWERPOINT
  • SUNDAY SCHOOL = SOCIAL STUDIES
